INTRODUCTION

  • Persuasion is an act of trying to convince someone to agree with your point of view. 
  • For example
  • This is not just a picture of children selling magazines on streets. 
  • It emotionally engages the reader. 
  • It persuades the reader to help in the literacy of the children who do not have the access to education. 
  • This appeal is not only to our rational mind but to our values
  • Advertisements that we watch on TV and read in newspapers persuade us on something or the other.
  • There are many examples we will find in our daily life.


DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ARGUMENTATIVE AND PERSUASIVE TEXT

Argumentative Essay Persuasive Essay
1- Formal and academic in nature.
2- Based on Logic.
3- Appeals to the mind of the reader.
4- The reader understands the evidences and takes a stand.
5- The author considers the opposing views as well.
6- Hard evidences are used such as surveys, experts and statistics.
7- Tone is calmer. 
8- Requires thorough research to present a coherent argument.
9- The aim is to present the arguments as valid and reasonable.
10- The conclusion comes across as logical.
11- Example: Dettol soap advertisement which says 90% of the dermatologists recommend Dettol as it has been scientifically proven to reduce or kill the infecting germs by 98%. 
1- It is informal in style as it seeks to evoke emotions.
2- Based on Emotion.
3- Appeals to the emotions in the reader.
4- The reader feels for the cause and takes a stand.
5- The author does not include alternate arguments.
6- Heartfelt emotions are employed to arouse empathy of the reader.
7- Tone is emotional and aggressive.
8- Requires an understanding of the audience to appeal to their emotions.
9- The aim is to convince the readers with the writer's point of view.
10- The conclusion comes as an emotional response to the cause.
11- Example: A lost puppy advertisement which says "How much do you love me?" It has the emotional appeal to the audience.


STRUCTURE OF THE PERSUASIVE TEXT

(i) Inverted Pyramid

  • In this type, all important information is given first.
  • The writer's stand is given in the beginning of the essay.
  • There is not much to guess for the reader besides the reasons that the writer develops in the essay.


(ii) Traditional Pyramid

  • In this type, the most important information features in the end.
  • The stand of the writer comes at the end after giving all possible reasons for his position on the matter.
  • The writer gently leads a way for the reader.


A Persuasive essay is generally structured have three paragraphs

(i) Introductory Paragraph

(ii) Three body Paragraphs

(iii) Concluding Paragraph

(i) Introductory Paragraph


It introduces the topic of discussion and includes the thesis statement.The readers get acquainted with the focus of the essay.

(ii) Body Paragraphs

  • It has three paragraphs which provide the reasons for the writer's perspective.
  • The reasons validate the point made in the essay.
  • The aim is to convince the reader about their acceptance.


(iii) Concluding Paragraph

  • It is most effective because it directly addresses and urges the reader to act and react with the writer. 
  • The assertion is strongest with this ending paragraph and it encapsulates the author's perspective.
