INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we will study the aspects of English Language and understand the reading process as well as the strategies of developing reading awareness for effective reading of literary texts in tutor- mediated situations.

STRUCTURES AND TACTICS FOR CLASSROOM READING OF LITERARY TEXTS

  • Reading is a primary activity for gaining knowledge and comprehension of the textual content.
  • Reading can be implemented through establishing and executing a specific kind of instructional design or technique.
  • Instructional design for reading a literary text involves two aspects that are connected and together can redefine the teaching of language in any cultural context.
  • These are known as structures and tactics.
  • They play a crucial role in reading and learning.

DEVELOPING AWARENESS FOR EFFECTIVE READING

Some faulty assumptions that cause ineffective reading of a literary text are explained below

(i) Knowledge ensures better reading

Knowledge of literary content is useful but adequate knowledge does not guarantee effective reading. Practice makes reading perfect.

(ii) Good readers are born not made

No one is born a reader though one may have an innate penchant for reading. Reading habit can be honed and perfected only by repeated practice and greater exposure to books.

DEVELOPING EFFICACY IN READING

  • The efficacy of reading a literary text can be improved by taking the following steps
  • Analysing the need for reading awareness
  • A reader must introspect to analyse the need and purpose of reading a text before reading a literary text.

(ii) Establishing learning parameters for reading

A reader must introspect to analyse the extent of content mastery he needs to achieve and why, what specific skills does he need to gain and why; how will he ascertain if he has achieved the mastery of content and acquired the specific skills.

DEVELOPING LITERARY READING ABILITY

1. Understand the structured and lexical meanings of the words, phrases and sentences

2. Read aloud, with correct pronunciation, accent, stress and intonation.

3. Make an accurate conjecture about the meaning of an unknown word.

4. Read silently without moving the lips and have a balanced eye movement while reading and enable retention at the same rate.

5. Consult a dictionary to find out the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

6. Make a summary of the important points of the passage after reading and comprehension.

7. Examine the text from the writer's point of view and infer the mood, opinion, style and focus of the writer.
