Indian Classical Litrature ( Kalidasa Abhijnanasakuntalam ) Unit- 2

Q. What is the theme of the play?

Ans.

  • Kalidasa's The Recognition of Shakuntala is the story of how the king. Dushanta meets and secretly marries Shakuntala, the daughter of a sage. When he leaves, he gives h his ring, but she loses it and when she shows up in court with his son, Bharata, she does recognize her until the gods intervene One of the themes may be the importance of paying attention to details.
  • The ring because she is distracted while attending to the irritable sage Durvasa, and he curse her. But a more important theme is that the theme of honesty and Integrity When Shakuntala and Bharata appear before Dushanta, he at first does not recognize them or his secret marriage because the ring is lost, but then the gods call him out Given that Shankuntala must rely on a token, the ring, to remind Dushanta of their love and their secret marriage vows before he will recognize her and his son, I'd say that this story takes a rather cynical view on love.
  • It is written so that the characters are not entirely resposible for the mess their relationship is in (i.e. a sage's curse seems to be the problem between them but the point seems to be that they cannot act on their love without some public recognition of it.
  • A more idealistic view would say that love conquers all: because they love each other. they can overcome the sage's curse.

Q. Write about the role of Anusuya and Priyamvada.

Ans.

  • Anusuya and Priyamvada are two companions of Shakuntala in the hermitage. When the king enters in the hermitage they were with Shakuntala. At the time of departure with her friends Shakuntala reveals about her feelings towards, the king, though with modesty.
  • These friends helped to send Shakuntala to her lawful husband. The two friends of Shakuntala, although they are not endowed with so many wealth still their friendship forced them to give some presentations at her friends wedding ceremony. They deposited a wreath of bakula flowers capable of lasting for a period of time retaining its odour in the casket of palm-leaves, hanging from the branch of the mango tree cosmetics such as mrigarochana, holy dust and tender durva grass.
  • The see even sisterly affection between them is finely delineated.

Q. Critically comment on the dramatic function of the ring in Abhijnanashakuntalam.

Ans.

  • The ring in AbhijnanaShakuntalam by Kalidasa. The title signifies rejection and acceptance of Shakuntala by Dushanta and in that the signet ring plays a dominant role.
  • Durvasa's curse falls off from the blue sky like a hot potato on a sweet and soft maiden blooming in her teens. Durvasa as his name suggests is a loudmouthed volcanic saint ready to utter evils at a short notice.
  • The poor girl is "lost in thoughts of one/to the exclusion of all else. The angry saint curses her "though you good his memory hard/he shall fail to remember you". He fails to keep up to his saintly nature and unwittingly ruins the career of a young maiden.
  • The offer of the ring promises the young maiden the prestigious position of the chief friends implore the angry saint to relent his curve on the young girl who has no way humbled queen of Dushanta and its recovery and restoration brings her good fortune.
  • Shakuntala's and humiliated him. Durvasa says in anger," My curse  cannot prove false; but its power will cease the moment she presents some ornament as a token of recognition.
  • Priyamvada is inscribed on it. Shakuntala on her way to the court washes her hands at the Shachi's pond sure that the king will accept Shakuntala when she shows him his signet ring with his name and there the ring slips off her finger and she does not know the loss.
  • Dushanta greets the people from the ashram with honor but he fails to recognize Shakuntala who bears child by him. Durvasa wipes off his love encounters and impregnation bouts with Shakuntala in the ashram. He calls her like a muddy river ready to uproot the tree (here the king). He tells her not to sully his public image, his integrity and character.
  • Shakuntala feels shaken and she offers to show him the signet ring given to her by him during his stay in the ashram. the ring, the instrument of recognition is missing. The 'highly prized token' she hardly knows has slipped off her finger in the Shachi's pool. The king is ironic about her statement and makes character is a puppet in the hands of Fate or Destiny.
  • Then it negates man's the power of will and his freedom to carve his own path. If Fate enters the story it is hard to discuss any character. It appears each character is a toy made, unmade by fate.
