• It involves the accurate association of meanings with word symbols and the ability to logically and rationally analyse ideas and vocabulary segments in that.

DEFINITION AND LEVELS OF COMPREHENSION

• It involves understanding the ideas in the text.

• To comprehend a passage, we need to understand every word, the sentences and the paras in the passage.

• Comprehension is a process of deep thinking and involves meticulous reading. 

• It depends on the readers' basic cognitive and intellectual skills and language skills.

TYPES OF READING COMPREHENSION

There are five categories of reading comprehension

1. Lexical Comprehension

2. Literal Comprehension

3. Interpretive Comprehension

4. Applied Comprehension

5. Affective Comprehension

SKILLS FOR READING COMPREHENSION

• Reading Comprehension skill may be innate but can also be acquired through various strategies. 

• The skill can be attained through practices such as decoding, fluency

Decoding Words

• Decoding involves the skill of connecting individual sounds to letters. 

• Words can only be pronounced and then spelt correctly if the reader has made a link between a letter, or group of letters, and the sounds they typically make.

• The ability to express and understand words which are unfamiliar is the basis for other reading skills. 

Fluency in Reading

• Fluency which involves the immediate recognition of sounds and words accelerates the pace at which readers can read and understand the text. 

• Decoding every word may be time- consuming. 

• immediate recognition of complete words by silent reading instead of sounding them out.

ACADEMIC READING AND KNOWLEDGE IN COMPREHENSION

• It depends on the nature of the passage and the type of comprehension it needs.

• Academic reading may be for finding the authorial perspectives and mode of narration, getting data and information, understanding

• Various strategies of reading a text are there.
